Comparing Litsea Cubeba Oil by the Gram

A 0.5 oz bottle and a 5 lb container are hard to compare by sticker alone, and the cheaper-looking one is not always the better value. Litsea cubeba rewards a little arithmetic, because it is a strong oil that most projects use in tiny amounts. Here is how to turn any listing into a number you can actually compare.

Start by converting everything to grams

Small bottles are sold by volume and bulk by weight, so grams are the common language. The Certificate of Analysis we publish for one batch gives a relative density of 0.883 at 20 C, which means 1 ml of that batch weighs about 0.883 g. One ounce (29.57 ml) comes to roughly 26.1 g, and a 0.5 oz bottle to about 13.1 g. Other litsea oils run a little different, but the spread is small enough that 0.883 is a sound working figure. Divide any price by the grams and a 0.5 oz bottle and a 5 lb jug line up on the same scale.

Ask what a gram of citral costs, if you can

If you are buying litsea for its lemon character, the citral in each gram is the fairer thing to compare. Published analyses disagree on how much that is: about 79% to 87% in laboratory distillates from eight Chinese sites, and about 66% across six commercial batches in an EFSA opinion (our addition of the two reported means). A gram at the top of that spread carries around a third more citral than a gram at the bottom, since 87.4 divided by 66.1 is about 1.32.

The sum only works with a batch report that gives the citral percentage. If you need one for our oil, ask us in writing through the contact page before you order. Our quality article explains which document answers which question.

Then work out what your project really uses

Price per gram becomes a real cost once you multiply by what a batch consumes. Three examples show how far apart projects can sit. All use roughly 20 drops per ml, a rough convention, so weigh on a scale when you can.

A 0.5 oz bottle holds about 296 drops by that convention. At 3 to 12 drops per ounce batch, it covers roughly 25 to 99 one-ounce batches. For small skin projects, the oil is the cheapest line item, and the carrier, jars and labels you buy elsewhere will cost more. For a soap maker the picture flips. One pound of oil (453.6 g) covers about two and a half to three and a third runs of 10 kg, so price per pound and citral percentage drive the decision.

Count what you will use before it ages

We say litsea cubeba typically keeps for one to two years, tightly capped in a cool, dark place. That gives you a way to size a purchase. Making one 1 oz batch a month at 12 drops takes about 25 months to get through a 0.5 oz bottle, longer than that window, so a bottle that size already covers a steady pace. For heavier users, bulk containers make sense, and we suggest decanting working amounts into smaller airtight bottles so the main container is opened less often.

Putting it together

  1. Convert each listing to price per gram, in the same currency.
  2. If you can get a batch report, divide by the citral fraction. If you cannot, note that gap instead of assuming a figure.
  3. Estimate the grams your real batches need over a year, and compare with the one to two year window.
  4. Add shipping time, and consider a sample bottle first. Our wholesale page describes how to order one to try in your own product.

For current prices on our oil, the shop page always has the latest. If you are still deciding on a size for a first project, your first bottle applies these sums to specific batch sizes.

A low price is a good reason to ask for the batch report, and a high one is not proof of quality. What the sums above give you is simpler and more useful: what you are paying for per unit of what you actually need.
