Household Odors: Clean First, Then Add a Lemon Note

A bright lemon note is a lovely thing to have in a closet or a cupboard, and litsea cubeba is made for it. What it will not do is take the place of finding out why a space smells the way it does. Every stale gym bag, shoe or refrigerator has a cause, and the order that works is simple: clear out the cause, let everything dry, and then decide whether a little scent belongs there.

Start with the fridge, where the advice is clearest

The best-documented household odor job is a refrigerator or freezer that held spoiled food. Texas A&M's extension service gives a short routine: remove the food, wash the inside with a tablespoon of baking soda in a quart of tap water (or a cup of vinegar in a gallon), and let it dry. If the smell lingers, activated charcoal in pans on the floor of the unplugged unit, left for several days, is the next step. The sheet is candid that if the odor has reached the insulation, you should ask the manufacturer, because sometimes nothing can be done (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, ER-005).

Notice that no essential oil appears anywhere in that routine, and we would keep it that way. Our advice is to keep oil bottles and scented pads out of the refrigerator and away from food and food packaging altogether. Nobody wants lemon-scented butter, and it is not a smell you can wash back out. If you want a fresh note in the kitchen, give it a cotton pad in a cupboard, well away from anything edible.

Shoes, bins and gym bags

Here the pattern is easy to reason out, though we are reasoning, not quoting a study. The usual cause is something organic left damp: sweat in an insole, food residue on a bin liner, workout clothes zipped up overnight. The fix has the same shape as the fridge routine. Remove the source, wash what the label allows, and dry it completely. Only then does scent have anything to do.

PlaceClear out firstWhere a scented pad can sit afterwards
ShoesInsoles taken out, washed if the label allows, dried fullyIn the shoe cupboard beside the pair, not inside a shoe
Kitchen binEmptied, washed, rinsed, air-driedIn a nearby cupboard, away from food
Gym bagEmptied, washed if the label allows, aired with the zip openIn a small closed tin in the outer pocket

There is a bonus to this order of work. If a smell returns within a day or two of a good cleaning, you have learned something: the source is still there. A scented pad laid over it would hide that clue.

How much oil a pad needs

Our oil is sold neat, and it is strong, so a pad needs very little. This is arithmetic for you to adapt, not a tested routine. At roughly 20 drops to the milliliter (droppers vary) and the relative density of 0.883 on the Certificate of Analysis for our current batch, three drops weigh about 0.13 g. A 1 oz bottle holds around 590 drops, which is enough for about 195 three-drop pads, and a 0.5 oz bottle for about 98. Because this oil is happiest cool, dark and tightly closed, with a typical shelf life of one to two years, the best schedule for a pad is your nose: refresh it when the lemon note fades.

Homes with pets or small children

This is the one place we would skip the pad entirely. The ASPCA notes that in concentrated form essential oils can be a danger for pets, and that dogs and cats can be affected by walking through oil or getting it on a coat (ASPCA). We keep our oil away from children and pets, and if you share a home with either, a veterinarian or a poison center is the right place for questions.

Keeping to scent

We sell litsea cubeba for its aroma, and we describe it that way and no other. That is also the line regulators draw: the EPA lists claims such as sanitizing, disinfecting, or controlling bacteria that cause odors among those that can turn a cleaning product into a regulated pesticide (Determining If a Cleaning Product Is a Pesticide Under FIFRA). We make no cleaning, deodorizing or germ claim for our oil, and the laboratory papers on litsea oil and microbes, which our fungal studies post reads closely, were done in dishes, not in shoe cupboards.

When you want scent that fills a room, our room spray post goes further, and the all-purpose cleaner post covers a scented surface spray. For the rest of the household ideas, see our uses round-up.

A clean, dry cupboard with one small lemon-scented pad in it is a pleasant thing to open. Do the cleaning first, and the scent becomes the finishing touch it was meant to be.
